WhatsApp Business Account banned: what actually works to get it back

9 min readby Hardik Patel

If you are reading this with a live outage, start here: the appeal succeeds less than 10% of the time, and an Indian decision usually lands in two to three working days. That is not a reason to skip it — it is a reason to file it properly today and put your traffic somewhere else while you wait.

First, work out which kind of ban you have

Three states get called “banned” and they behave very differently.

  • Quality rating dropped to Low. Not a ban. It is the warning that precedes one, and it is the state you can still fix cheaply.
  • Messaging limit reduced, or the number restricted. Sending is throttled or paused. Often recoverable, and the fastest thing you can influence.
  • The WABA is disabled. The account is down. This is the one that needs an appeal, and the one where the number may not come back at all.

Check which you are in under Business Manager → Business Support Home before doing anything else. Appealing the wrong state wastes the fastest days you have.

What actually caused it

In practice three triggers account for the overwhelming majority of bans, and they are all things a sending platform should have stopped:

  • Sending to purchased or unsaved contacts. People who never opted in report the message, and reports are the single strongest ban signal.
  • Unofficial automation. Anything driving WhatsApp outside the official Business API — modded clients, browser automation, “bulk sender” tools — is a policy violation on its own.
  • Sending through the warning. The quality rating goes amber, the campaign keeps running, and a recoverable problem becomes a terminal one.

The appeal that gets read

In Business Manager: Business Support Home → select the affected WhatsApp Business Account → choose the listed violation → Request Review. That is the only channel that exists. Anyone selling an unban service is selling you a route Meta does not recognise.

Generic appeals are auto-rejected. An appeal that gets a human read does three things, in this order:

  1. Names the cause. Not “we believe this was a mistake” — the actual campaign, list and date.
  2. States what changed. The opt-in source you now use, the pacing you now send at, the template categories you corrected.
  3. Explains why it cannot recur. The control you added — a consent record, a smaller first send, an opt-out that is honoured at send time.

Write it in that order and keep it to a short paragraph each. You are giving a reviewer the evidence to say yes, not arguing that they were wrong.

What the clock looks like
  1. Day 0
Establish which state you are actually inBusiness Manager → Business Support Home. Appealing the wrong state spends the fastest days you have.
  2. Day 0
File the Request ReviewName the cause, state what changed, explain why it cannot recur — a short paragraph each, in that order.
  3. Day 0
Move transactional traffic off the numberOrder updates, OTPs and delivery alerts do not need WhatsApp to be useful. Standing still is what turns a two-week problem into a two-month one.
  4. Days 2–3
Most Indian decisions come backApproved appeals more broadly take three to seven business days.
  5. After a week
Silence is an answerThe realistic read is rejected rather than still pending. Plan the next move on that basis.

The appeal succeeds less than 10% of the time, which is a reason to file it properly today rather than a reason not to bother.

The three Day 0 items are one afternoon, not a sequence — and only the middle one depends on Meta for anything.

What to do while you wait

The mistake that turns a two-week problem into a two-month one is standing still. Your customers still need order updates and your users still need to log in.

  • Move transactional traffic to SMS on a DLT-registered route. Order updates, OTPs and delivery alerts do not need WhatsApp to be useful. See the DLT registration guide.
  • Keep authentication running. If your login depends on a single channel, a ban takes your signups down with your campaigns. A merchant-set fallback — WhatsApp first, SMS behind it, or the reverse — means a suspended WABA is a marketing problem rather than an outage.
  • Do not register a fresh number and carry on. Repeating the behaviour on a new number is how a single ban becomes a pattern across the Business Manager.

How not to be here again

Prevention is a separate discipline and we have written it up in full at how to avoid a WABA ban in India. The short version is that bans are a sending-discipline problem, not a luck problem: send to people who asked, in the right template category, at a pace the number can carry, and stop the moment quality moves.

Two of those are things a platform should do for you rather than leave to a checklist. On QuickAuth a campaign sends a canary batch first — 1% on campaigns over 1,000, bounded between 50 and 1,000 recipients, and a flat 20-message probe below that — so a template that is going to draw reports does it on a probe instead of on your whole list. Sender and template health are re-checked between waves, and the send halts before a number goes unsendable. An opt-out is enforced at send time and never billed.

None of that makes a ban impossible. It makes the three common causes hard to do by accident, which is most of the distance.

Questions

Can a banned WhatsApp Business number be recovered?

Sometimes, but not reliably. Appeals through Business Manager succeed less than 10% of the time, and a number banned at the API level often cannot be re-registered at all. Treat recovery as the less likely outcome and plan for continuity in parallel.

How long does a WhatsApp ban appeal take in India?

Most Indian decisions come back within two to three working days. Approved appeals more broadly take three to seven business days. If you have heard nothing after a week, the realistic read is that it was rejected rather than still pending.

Do WhatsApp unban services work?

No. The only valid channel is the appeal inside Meta Business Manager or the in-app review request. Anyone selling a guaranteed unban has no route Meta recognises, and handing them account access adds a second problem to the first.

How do I recover a Low quality rating before it becomes a ban?

Stop the campaign that caused it, send only utility or authentication traffic to engaged recipients, and hold that for about a week. Most Low ratings return to Medium within seven days of clean sending. The rating is the warning; the ban is what happens if you send through it.
